Before the House Committee on Veterans Affairs Regarding 2006 Legislative Priorities
February 16, 2006

VVA demanded that Congress recommend legislation to change the funding of veterans health care. VA issues in need of attention include unclogging the adjudication backlog, better management and training, expanded outreach to veterans, issues regarding fee-based care for service-disabled veterans, and that VA clinicians must take a complete military history of all veterans in or entering the VA health care system.

VVA demanded that Congress call for a review of the penalties for military sexual trauma, seek to re-authorize the biennial report of the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans, provide funds for study into the long-term health effects of dioxin, sufficiently fund the Homeless Veterans Assistance Act of 2000, and appropriate additional funds to conduct POW/MIA searches, declassify relevant documents, and to pass a resolution urging the government of Vietnam to further cooperate regarding this issue.
VVA will continue to work to ensure the passage of The Veterans’ Right To Know Commission Act and for the improvement of employment, training, and business opportunities for all veterans.

VVA called for the Pentagon to perform a full medical examination, to include drawing blood and psychosocial history, for all troops prior to and upon their return from deployment overseas.
