Region 3 Report

Spotlight on Chapter 588

By Richard Labarre

Region 3 is blessed with many great chapters and members. In an ongoing effort to recognize these chapters and their commitment to VVA, I would like to showcase Maryland Chapter 588. Frank Stacy, long-time VVA activist, has provided the following information:

Harford County Maryland Chapter 588 has just completed its 11th year in VVA with 91 members. During the past year the chapter took care of 13 families (52 people) with a truck full of clothes and food. Members of the chapter also went to Perry Point VA Hospital on Christmas morning to distribute gifts to veterans. In May, we had our Third Annual Golf Tournament and made enough money to pay for our tenth year of giving a $500 scholarship to the local community college and help pay for some of our other projects.  We have just completed our ninth year in the Adopt-A-Highway Clean-up in Harford County and our tenth year participating in the Independence Day Parade in Bel Air.

The chapterís annual crab feast raffle took place in August. The winner took the cash prize of $400. In September, members of the Honor Guard were involved in a POW/MIA ceremony held by the Harford County Veterans Commission. The round-table ceremony was performed by members of chapter 588 and 722.The chapter is living up to the VVA motto, '

'Never Again Will One Generation of Veterans Abandoned Another."  The chapter is lending a helping hand to the families of the Maryland National Guard Unit stationed at Edgewood Arsenal, which was activated and sent to Bosnia. VVA Chapter 712ís Operation Yellow Ribbon in Annapolis, Maryland, has spread to Harford County, and we will continue to help and support our state National Guard units.

Region 3 is made up of seven states and the District of Columbia. The Appalachian Mountains bind us together. We are one great region.
