WASHINGTON. (October 9, 2001)-The Vietnam Veterans Assistance Fund (VVAF), the nonprofit charitable arm of Vietnam Veterans of America, received a grant today from the Department of Veterans Affairs to develop and expand its programs that help homeless veterans.

“We are very pleased that the VA has taken this important step,” said Calvin Gross, the VVAF President. “VVAF’s main goal is to help disabled and needy veterans and the widows and orphans of veterans through grants to innovative assistance programs around the country, many of which are aimed at the homeless. This grant will go a long way toward helping more homeless veterans and their families.”

Called the Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program, it allows VA to assist public and private non-profit agencies to establish and operate new supportive housing and service centers for homeless veterans. The program has been in existence since 1994.

“The Vietnam Veterans Assistance Fund has been funding homeless veterans and other programs since 1991,” said VVA National President Thomas H. Corey. “The funds come entirely from contributions from individuals, primarily through the federal government’s Combined Federal Campaign, as well as through public and private grants, such as the generous one the VA announced today. We are very grateful for the support from this innovative and worthwhile program.”

Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) is the nation's only congressionally chartered veterans service organization dedicated solely to the needs of Vietnam-era veterans and their families.  VVA's founding principle is
"Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another."
