(Washington, D.C.) – Cecil E. Roberts, Jr., the President of the United Mine Workers of America, will address the delegates at Vietnam Veterans of America's 15th National Convention on Thursday, August 18, in Reno, Nevada. Following his speech, Roberts will receive the Vietnam Veterans of America President's Award for Outstanding Civic Leadership. A sixth generation West Virginia coal miner, Cecil Roberts became the UMWA President in October 1995, having served as the organization's Vice President since 1982.
"Cecil Roberts is widely recognized as one of the American labor movement's most dynamic leaders and stirring speakers, and we are very much looking forward to what he has to say to our delegates," VVA National President John Rowan said. "What's more, he served his country in the Vietnam War, and we are always proud to recognize the accomplishments of one of our own."
The VVA Convention runs from August 17-20 at the Silver Legacy Hotel in Reno. Some eight hundred delegates from VVA chapters across the country are expected to join hundreds of other Vietnam veterans and guests in Reno. The delegates will set the organization's course for the next two years, hear from an array of speakers, attend information sessions, and take part in special events. That includes the Awards Banquet, which honors Vietnam veterans and others in the arts, on Saturday evening, August 20.
