(Washington, D.C.) -- Congressman Bob Filner (D-Calif.), who as chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee has been a tireless advocate for veterans, and Chet Edwards (D-Tex.), who chairs the powerful Military Construction/Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee, will be presented with “Legislator of the Year” awards on Saturday, August 1, during the 14th biennial National Convention of Vietnam Veterans of America, at the Galt House Hotel & Suites in Louisville, Kentucky.
Filner and Edwards “have moved key bills that are of significant benefit to veterans and their families, particularly the advance appropriations bill, H.R. 1016,” said John Rowan, VVA National President. “Chairman Filner is being cited for his ‘unyielding advocacy on behalf of our nation’s veterans,’” said Rowan. “And Chairman Edwards is being recognized of his ‘unstinting efforts on behalf of our nation’s veterans.’”
More than six hundred delegates from VVA local chapters across the country will join hundreds of other Vietnam veterans and guests in Louisville for the National Convention. Following the Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday, July 29, the delegates will meet in convention to debate national resolutions and Constitutional amendments. Later in the week, they will vote for VVA’s national leaders—officers and board members—for the upcoming two years.
The Convention includes several other special events. Bill Nelson, a Vietnam veteran who is the chairman and CEO of HBO, will take part in screenings of the acclaimed HBO film Taking Chance. Actor Jon Voight will speak on the movement to institute a national Vietnam Veterans Day holiday. Former Miss America Heather French Henry will address the delegates. And Pat Sajak, Jon Voight, the Western artist John Phelps, Taking Chance screenwriter Mike Strobl, and Heather French Henry will take part in an autographing session on Saturday afternoon.
