Garry Trudeau, Creator of Doonesbury,
To Receive Award at VVA's National Leadership Conference

(Washington, D.C.) – Pulitzer-Prize-winning cartoonist Garry Trudeau, the creator of “Doonesbury,” will receive the President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts at Vietnam Veterans of America’s biennial National Leadership Conference on Friday, July 14, in Tucson. The honor will be presented at the Awards Luncheon at the Hilton El Conquistador Hotel and Resort, the site of the Leadership Conference.

“Garry Trudeau has been one of the most influential artistic voices of the Vietnam War generation for more than three decades,” said VVA President John Rowan. “We are honoring him for his entire body of work and for creating B.D., a character who resonates strongly with Vietnam veterans. B.D., like us, is a Vietnam veteran, and his service in the war—and as a National Guardsman in Iraq—continues to have an impact on his life.”

Following the luncheon, Trudeau will sign copies of his latest book, The Long Road Home, which

deals with B.D.’s life after he lost a leg fighting in Iraq. That tale was inspired by Trudeau’s visits to wounded troops he has met during many visits to Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital and Fisher House. The latter is part of a group of non-profit residences on the grounds of military and veterans hospitals for families of the wounded. Trudeau is donating all proceeds from The Long Road Home to the Fisher House Foundation.

The Leadership Conference brings together hundreds of Vietnam veteran advocates from around the nation. They will take part in four days of seminars, meetings, and other activities. Opening Ceremonies will be held Wednesday, July 12. VVA’s supporting organization, the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America, will hold its biennial convention and national elections concurrently with the Leadership Conference.

Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) is the nation's only congressionally chartered veterans service organization dedicated to the needs of Vietnam-era veterans and their families.  VVA's founding principle is “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.”
