Vietnam Veterans of America
to Hold Scholarship Golf Tournament

(Washington, D.C.) – Vietnam Veterans of America, the nation’s only congressionally chartered veterans service organization working on behalf of Vietnam veterans and their families, will hold its annual Mike Nash Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament on Tuesday, July 11, at the Hilton El Conquistador Tennis and Golf Resort in Tucson. The event will take place in conjunction with VVA’s biennial National Leadership Conference, which brings together hundreds of Vietnam veteran advocates to take part in seminars, meetings, and other activities. Opening Ceremonies will be held Wednesday, July 12.

“This always is a popular event for our members,” said Bill Messer, the president of VVA’s Arizona State Council, which is hosting the conference. “We always have a lot of fun—and it’s for a good cause, college scholarships for deserving children and grandchildren of Vietnam veterans across the country.”

Registration for the shotgun-start tournament begins at 7:00 a.m. Tee time is 8:00. The cost per player is $85, which includes cart, lunch, raffle tickets, range balls, and a goody bag. Golf clubs are available to rent for $25. “We have sponsors for all 18 holes,” Messer said, “which shows the strong support for the tournament within the organization.”

On Friday, July 14, VVA will hold an Awards Luncheon to recognize its members for their accomplishments. At the luncheon, Gary Trudeau, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and creator of the comic strip Doonesbury, will receive the VVA President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Leadership conference attendees will take part in several other special events during the conference, and there will be addresses by prominent Vietnam veterans and veterans’ advocates.

The seminars include sessions on helping veterans obtain healthcare and other benefits they’re entitled to, being informed and informing our newest veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq about Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and other veterans’ health care issues, advocacy training workshops, how to become an informed leader in the veterans community, and other important topics impacting the veterans’ community.
