Documentary Filmmaker John Hulme To Receive
Arts Award at VVA National Convention

(Washington, D.C.) – John Hulme, who produced and directed Unknown Soldier: Searching For a Father, which appeared on HBO in May, will receive the President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts at Vietnam Veterans of America’s 12th biennial National Convention at the Silver Legacy Hotel in Reno, Nevada, on Saturday, August 13. Hulme’s film documents his quest to learn about his father, Marine Lt. Jack Hulme, who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969 when John Hulme was three weeks old.

“We are proud to honor this excellent young filmmaker,” said VVA national President Thomas H. Corey. “He has put together an outstanding documentary that shows the ongoing legacy of the Vietnam War and also pays tribute to his father–and, by extension, all Americans who served their country in the Vietnam War."

Hulme met and interviewed men who served with his father, his father’s college and high school friends, and family members. He and his mother Ellen traveled to Vietnam, to the place where Jack Hulme spent the last few minutes of his life. That trip that proved cathartic to mother and son. “Where once there was nothing between Jack Hulme and I,” John Hulme says, “now there is a lifetime of memories, and I’m proud to be my father’s son.”

An estimated seven hundred delegates from VVA chapters will join hundreds of other Vietnam veterans and guests at the Convention in Reno, which begins on Wednesday, August 10. The delegates will set the organization’s course for the next two years, elect national officers and a Board of Directors, hear from an array of speakers, and take part in special events, including the Awards Banquet on Saturday night, August 13.
