(Washington, D.C.) – Filmmaker Randall Wallace (Braveheart and We Were Soldiers), journalist and author Joe Galloway, and other special guests will join the leadership of Vietnam Veterans of America at the organization’s biennial National Leadership Conference August 14-18 in Tucson, Arizona. The conference brings together hundreds of Vietnam veteran advocates for a series of educational seminars, speakers, and other activities.

The conference will include several special events, including an awards banquet in which VVA will recognize its own members’ accomplishments. There also will be addresses by prominent Vietnam veterans and their advocates. Wallace, the screenwriter and director of the Vietnam War film, We Were Soldiers, will receive the President’s Award for his work. Galloway, the former Vietnam War correspondent who with Gen. Hal Moore wrote the seminal Vietnam War military history, We Were Soldiers Once and Young, will deliver the keynote address.

“This event is instrumental in several ways,” said VVA National President Thomas H. Corey. “It gives Vietnam veteran leaders from around the country the chance to learn many different skills, from helping veterans gain their rightful benefits to how to publish a first-rate local chapter newsletter. And it gives our leaders a chance to get together with fellow Vietnam veterans and share ideas.”

The conference will be held at the Sheraton El Conquistador in Tucson. VVA’s supporting organization, the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America, will hold its biennial convention and elections concurrently with the conference.

Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) is the nation's only congressionally chartered veterans service organization dedicated to the needs of Vietnam-era veterans and their families.  VVA's founding principle is “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.”
