IMMEDIATE RELEASE September
VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA SUPPORTS VETERANS
COMPREHENSIVE HEPATITIS C HEALTH CARE ACT
"Vietnam Veterans of America enthusiastically
supports H.R. 5132, the “Veterans Comprehensive Hepatitis C Health
Care Act, and expresses our thanks to Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen
for his vital leadership in introducing this vitally needed
legislation,” said George C. Duggins, National President of Vietnam
Veterans of America (VVA).
“While the Veterans Health Administration has
made some progress in addressing the very significant problem of
Hepatitis C among veterans, especially Vietnam veterans, not nearly
enough has been done to provide effective outreach, consistent universal
testing, effective treatment, or properly funded and assertive efforts
toward research, education, technical assistance, as well as the
crucially needed meaningful oversight and quality assurance,”
It is estimated that approximately 10% of all
veterans who utilize the VA health care system are infected with
Hepatitis C. Two thirds of
those veterans are Vietnam era veterans.
While the VA has taken some important steps toward meeting this
crisis, VVA believes that much more needs to be done.
Prompt passage of the “Veterans
Comprehensive Hepatitis C Health Care Act” would move toward the level
of response to this major problem among veterans.
