AREA RESIDENT RETURNS TO VIETNAM

Lakehurst, N.J. resident, Bob Maras, a long-time Vietnam veterans’ advocate, will join a delegation of Vietnam veterans traveling to Vietnam Feb. 19-March 9 as part of Vietnam Veterans of America’s (VVA) highly successful Veterans Initiative Program. Maras chairs the national Veterans Affairs Standing Committee and also serves as the organization’s New Jersey State Council president.

Maras will assist the delegation of veterans in the Veterans Initiative’s ongoing, veteran-to-veteran effort to help Vietnam account for its estimated 300,000 Vietnam War missing in action (MIAs). The group also will urge Vietnamese veterans to come forward with information on American soldiers still listed as MIA in that war. Agent Orange/Dioxin issues will also be a topic of discussion.

This is the 12th VVA Veterans Initiative trip to Vietnam. As in the past, Maras and the other Vietnam veterans will turn documents, photos, and other war-related items and information gathered from American Vietnam veterans over to their Vietnamese counterparts in an effort to locate the MIAs on both sides of the conflict.

The VVA national delegation also will include Tom Corey, national vice president of VVA; Janet Alheit, Corey’s assistant and nurse; George Claxton, chair of the Agent Orange/Dioxin Standing Committee; Bob Necci, chair of the POW/MIA Standing Committee; and Dr. Linda Schwartz, chair of the national Task Force for Health Care and Policy.

VVA’s point of contact for additional information is Scott D. Campbell at (202) 628-2700 ext. 158.
