Washington, DC - George Duggins, vice president of Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc., today assumes the presidency of the national organization. Duggins is the first African-American president of VVA -- a major veterans' service organization.

Duggins, a native of Chesapeake, Virginia, served with the U.S. Army Security Agency (ASA) from July 1965 to April 1969 with the rank of E-5. He served in Vietnam from May 1966 to December 1967 with the 8th RRFS in Phu Bai and from April 1968 to April 1969 with the 330th RR Co. in Pleiku.

A life member of Vietnam Veterans of America Tidewater Chapter 49 in Chesapeake, VA, Duggins joined the organization in 1985 and has held numerous elected and appointed positions. He has served on its national board of directors for nine years. Duggins is the past chair of the mayor's committee on veterans affairs for the city of Chesapeake, VA, and is the chairman of the board of trustees at Metropolitan AME Zion Church.

Said Duggins, "We are a membership organization dedicated to serving Vietnam-era veterans and their families. VVA remains committed to providing effective advocacy and services to our nation's veterans." Duggins has been particularly active in improving the delivery of health care, especially for treatment of PTSD, substance abuse, and mental health.
