VVA Press Release

SELLERSBURG, Indiana (July 1, 1996) -- Vietnam Veterans of America holds its 2nd Annual National Golf Tournament on July 31 at 9:00 a.m. at the Hidden Creek Golf Club.

The tournament, open to the public, benefits the VVA National Scholarship Fund. The fund awards scholarships to any spouse, child, or grandchild of a Vietnam veteran who was either killed in action or missing in action. Scholarships may also go to VVA members or associates, their spouses, children, or grandchildren.

This year, VVA will award nine $1,000 scholarships. A total of $2,000 in additional scholarships will be awarded to children with learning disabilities and to veterans incarcerated. "This tournament is an opportunity for people to have a great time out on the golf course and, at the same time, feel good about doing things for the community," says Vernon Valenzuela, golf tournament chairman and VVA California State Council president.

The individual player fee and/or minimum individual pledge is $65. "If a person can't afford the fee, he or she can collect pledges that add up to the $65," explains Valenzuela. "Anything over that is great because it increases the amount of help we can give to the people who need it." The fee includes green fee, golf car, range balls, tournament fees, and lunch.

Major prizes are being offered to people who collect at least $10 per hole for 18 holes. VVA Executive Director Carl Stout says, "Pledges may be collected from friends, families, co-workers -- anyone who wants to give to a good cause." The prizes will be awarded in various categories, such as most pledges received and best overall score. Valenzuela adds that players who own their own golf clubs are strongly encouraged to bring them, since rental clubs are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration forms and pledge sheets are available by calling Nicole Barbour at ext. 155.
